This is 3Bits & Change, an email about building a service and retail business. This one was written to some groves from Apple Music.
Good day,
Smoke blankets our city and we keep pushing to learn more about kitchen knives, our market and what’s going to keep growing this biz.
835 impressions in a day // no.1
I had been following Justin Welsh’s LinkedIn playbook last fall. Then I opened the Wayzata Vivront and failed to prioritize continued writing for the platform. We built a store tho!
I picked up posting again yesterday. 29 reactions and a slew of unique viewers have stopped by that post. Hi friends. It’s nice to be back at it on LinkedIn.
Broadcast media results //no.2
It’s been two months since we were running targeted podcast sponsorships and AM broadcast media. The overall targeting was off. The return on the invested dollars was not high enough to keep the campaign going. However, the traffic was up - 11x during the time the campaign was running.
Ontrack & Offtrack //no.3
Before transitioning from garage startup to physical knife shop I made projections for the four lines of income: 1) Sharpening by pre-paid shipping kit 2) Sharpening in store, 3) Retail, and 4) Skills classes.
So far, the biz is hitting the overall revenue projection. However, the allocation is different. Retail is much higher than expected (with a location behind a gas station with no foot traffic) and summer has really impacted class enrollment. So, we’re going to change days and hours this week. Standby.
Sum
Learning continues. Jump on LinkedIn if we’re not already friends. It’s a different kind of writing I’m doing there. Know broadcast media can create organic search volume (and I messed up optimization on the last round). And we’re on track for revenue while we’re also looking very intently at opening a new shop in a different part of town with 4-5x the total addressable market and density. Wish us luck.
On Your Way
Hope you find some indoor workout solutions to avoid the smoke in the coming days. I hit the bike last night for the first time in awhile. It was great.
