You are reading 3Bits & Change, Joseph's email about building a direct to consumer business on the internet and an occasional Web3 issue. Today’s email was written to the sound of a fan. Yes, a fan. It’s warm enough in MPLS to turn one on!
Good morning,
You got kitchen hacks… send ‘em our way. We’ll feature ‘em.
The following were all willing shared by our friend Dan. He loves his hacks. I think he needs his own hack substack. I’ve told him that. And yet, it does not exist. So, I’ll just share for him until he makes his own. And, when he does, I’ll share it with you all.
Bit #1 • Go buy takeout containers in bulk
He implored me to purchase these Deli containers a few months back. I snagged them on Amazon. We’re not as far down the pat as to green tape each, or any, of our containers. Yet, we are loving their uniformity, standard lid size and easy see through nature. We’re not going back to the previous solution. Those have been recycled. These, FTW.
Bit #2 • Top Ingredients
When you find an ingredient you really like… buy a lot of it. This is some flour for pizza dough that arrived at his place last week.
When you get a lot of something, just “industrialize” your approach. Do what the pros do and buy their “big” equipment and storage containers too.
Bit #3 • Get the kids going early
Get the kiddos a proper working stool for learning kitchen things at a workable height for their wrists and shoulders.
And snag some knives for the kids too!
Sum
Everybody should be so lucky to have a friend like Dan. He’s curious in an unending way and he does not stop. He shares all the time. I’m lucky to have Dan as my friend and until he writes his blog or substack, I’ll keep you up-to-date on his kitchen adventures. :) That is if he’ll keep sharing ‘em. I suspect he can’t help it.
How about you? Share your food adventures and kitchen hacks with us and we’ll share them with the newsletter too. We’ll all get better together.
Change
The school lunch waiver extension effort continues. It appears that the Support Kids Not Red Tape Act (S. 3979) is being deliberated in the Senate. Thanks to Tina Smith’s office for the tip (via printed and mailed letter, woah). The House version of the bill is Keeping School Meals Flexible Act (H.R. 6613). TBD on anything passing before June.
The President has announced that the White House will host a Conference on Hunger, Nutrition and Health in September. This kind of conference has not been held at the White House since Nixon. Maybe it assists the efforts on the Childhood Nutrition Reauthorization effort; something that had previously been updated every 5 years but has not been addressed since 2010.
Here are 31 pages of fun from a school board meeting regarding adjustments to their school lunch account practices. This stuff is completed. I’m mostly a rookie on the school lunch topic. However, this kind of process and documentation is an example of why it’s not a simple task to make changes to nutrition programs. This district decided to 1) not seek repayment for negative account balances. Also to 2) provide all kids with the same lunch regardless of account balance (in other words, to not provide alternative meals) and to 3) not allow those with negative balances access to ala carte items. Now, what to do about the debt that will start to accrue again in the fall (likely faster than we’ve ever seen before)?
